Please read the following terms and conditions carefully. They contain important information about your rights and obligations, as well as limitations and exclusions that apply to your purchases.

The Desperate Households online shop can be accessed at www.desperatehouseholds.co.za, related mobile sites and applications (“the Website”). The Website enables buyers to shop for household cleaning and disposable packaging items online and have them delivered door-to-door within the Western Cape, South Africa.

These Terms and Conditions (“the Terms and Conditions”) govern your (“the Customer”) use of the Desperate Household Supplies cc (trading as “Desperate Households”) Website located at the domain name www.desperatehouseholds.co.za. By accessing and using the Website, the Customer agrees to be bound by the Terms and Conditions set out in this legal notice. The Customer may not access, display, use, download, and/or otherwise copy or distribute Content obtained on the Website for marketing and other purposes without the consent of the Provider.

All users of this Website agree that access to and use of this Website is subject to the following terms and conditions and other applicable law. If you do not agree to these terms and conditions, please do not use this site. Your use of, and access to this Website constitutes your agreement to the Terms of Use. Desperate Households reserve the right to amend these terms and conditions at any time without prior notice. Desperate Households recommends that you read these and refer back to them periodically.


The merchant outlet country at the time of presenting payment options to the cardholder is South Africa. Transaction Currency is South African Rand (ZAR). Every product is displayed with its price. If on sale, the sale price will display. Prices are subject to change without notice. Desperate Households will take all reasonable efforts to maintain correct prices on the Website and sales orders. Should errors occur or items be offered at incorrect prices, Desperate Households will not be obliged to sell goods at such incorrect prices and shall only be liable to refund. Errors and Omission excluded.

Discount Vouchers or Coupons

Desperate Households gives Discount Coupons to loyal customers from time to time. If you are one of those lucky fishes you simply input the coupon code during the checkout process where the discount amount will be subtracted from the total amount.

Payment Options

Desperate Households accepts payments made by Visa and MasterCard Credit Cards and Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) into our bank account, the details of which will be provided upon checkout.

Credit Card

When you place an order, the transaction details are presented to the bank for authorisation of the payment amount.

If authorisation is not obtained, the order is cancelled. If authorisation is obtained, payment is usually immediate. You guarantee that you are fully authorised to use the credit card for payment of your order and that there are sufficient funds in this credit card account to cover the costs of any transactions you complete on Desperate Households.

Credit Card Security

Credit card transactions will be acquired for Desperate Households via approved payment gateways. Our payment gateways use the strictest form of encryption, namely Secure Socket Layer 3 (SSL3) and no credit card details are stored on the Desperate Households Website.  No credit card transactions are processed on the Desperate Households Website. This is to protect you as well as us. We do not have access to your credit card information at all. You will be redirected to our payment gateway after you place your order and will be asked for your credit card information. Once the transaction has successfully gone through, the order will be sent to us and you.

For your security, your billing name and address must match that of the credit card used for payment.    We reserve the right to cancel any order that does not match these criteria.

Instant EFT

Instant EFT is a payment option offered by our third-party payment gateway.  It enables buyers to complete online purchases by making an internet electronic banking transfer (EFT) which gets instantly verified. There is no two day waiting period, you don’t need to send proof of payment to us and it can be used with South Africa’s four biggest banks: ABSA, FNB, Nedbank and Standard Bank.


Please note, when selecting to pay by EFT, you have 48 hours after placing your order to make the payment.

When making your payment, please be sure to use your order number as your reference. This will ensure that we can process your order as quickly as possible.

Desperate Households will start processing your order as soon as your bank forwards the payment to us. Depending on the bank, it can take up to 3 days from the time you make the payment (which has to be done a maximum of 48 hours after placing the order) to when it appears in our bank account.

The delivery lead time as specified on the Website only starts once Desperate Households has received the payment from your bank.

Delivery Policy

We are focusing on the Western Cape region in the Republic of South Africa to start.  If you are from elsewhere in South Africa you are more than welcome to order, but additional Postage/Courier fees will be calculated for your account.

Delivery will be via courier, unless special shipping is requested.  Delivery cost is dependent on the area where delivery is required. A surcharge will be included for deliveries to farms, remote hospitals, power stations and high risk town ships.

Delivery charges are subject to change without notice.

Desperate Households delivers within business hours, i.e. there are no deliveries over weekends or on public holidays. Please take this into consideration when selecting your delivery address.  Courier deliveries cannot be delivered to a PO Box address and must be an address where someone can sign for the parcel during office hours.

As the Customer, you indicate in the checkout process where in South Africa you require delivery, as well as contact numbers to be used in connection with delivery. Desperate Households assumes no liability for orders shipped to incomplete or incorrect shipping addresses supplied by the Customer. Any additional fees for such orders will be the responsibility of the Customer.

Delivery Procedure

  • Once payment has been received, your order will be processed as soon as possible and then dispatched by our Courier company to the address given in the checkout process. Under normal circumstances, the time it takes from when an order is placed until it is dispatched for delivery is approximately 3 working days. All orders paid Monday to Thursday before 2pm and Friday before 11am leave the same day, otherwise next working day in the afternoon.
  • If nobody is present at the address at the time of delivery, our chosen courier will leave a calling card with their cell phone number on it to indicate that there was an attempted delivery and for you to phone to re-arrange delivery.
  • If you don’t contact them, the courier will try once more the following day, after which the parcel will be sent back to their depot where they will attempt to contact you using the telephone number provided in the checkout process.
  • Failing that, the parcel will be sent back to Desperate Households where we will contact you to discuss potential re-delivery at your own cost.
  • If this attempt does not succeed within a reasonable amount of time, Desperate Households will reimburse you the Rand value paid for the product(s) purchased.  Should a delivery fee have been charged on the order, this will not be reimbursed.

Unless we inform you otherwise, before you place your order or before the final confirmation, the estimated maximum delivery time for an order in the Western Cape, South Africa is 3 working days from receipt of payment. In instances where the order will take longer than 6 working days we will inform the customer as soon as possible.

A delivery is considered complete as soon as the parcel is accepted by an individual on your behalf at your specified delivery address.  This also applies when the package has been handed over by the courier, as indicated in the courier’s tracking system.

If a package is refused upon delivery, the customer will be responsible for all shipping charges incurred for the return of the item. Charges will be applied to any refund due to refusal. This policy does not apply to any merchandise that is received defective or damaged. Please refer to the Returns and Refund Policy section.

Cancelled orders on the Desperate Households Website will be refunded after deduction of a 10% charge for administration costs. Desperate Households reserves the right to cancel an order for which payment has already been received. This may occur if stock is insufficient or the quality of goods ordered does not meet our standards. Should we exercise this right, the Customer will receive a full refund with no deductions.

Returns and Refund Policy

If Desperate Households supplies the wrong product, or you have a damaged or faulty item, please contact us immediately on returns@desperatehouseholds.co.za.  We will collect the item at our expense and exchange it for the correct one within 14 days. Desperate Households will make a reasonable effort to exchange the product, but if replacement is not possible, we will refund the purchase price including delivery cost.

In accordance with the Consumer Protection Act, you are entitled to cancel your order of goods within 14 days after receipt thereof.  If you are unhappy for any reason and would like to return your order for a refund, please follow the steps below:

  • Email Desperate Households on returns@desperatehouseholds.co.za, explaining the reason for return, to obtain a Return Authorisation Number.
  • Items must be returned within 14 days after they have been approved for return and must be received in original condition AND packaging. Refunds will only be considered where the items are in their unused original sealed packaging.
  • Items that are returned need to be well packaged or wrapped to ensure there is no damage when returned. Items damaged due to poor packaging and handling will be subject to partial or no refund.
  • All items that are returned must be sent to Desperate Households using a trackable and insured delivery method. Please be sure to retain your returns delivery receipt in case the return gets lost in the post.
  • Shipping/courier costs are non-refundable and will be for the Customer’s account.
  • Sales items cannot be returned and all sales are final.
  • Although seldom charged, Desperate Households reserves the right to charge a 10% administration fee for returned orders should the returns process incur significant administration expenses.
  • Once received, you will be refunded the purchase price of the items within 30 days less any delivery/courier fee.

Stock Availability

The online shop acts as a catalogue of the products supplied by Desperate Households. These products are sourced from many suppliers and it is not possible for Desperate Households to keep stock of every item at all times. Desperate Households shall take all reasonable efforts to supply the goods that have been ordered, but sometimes it does happen that between the time the order is placed and payment received an item becomes out of stock.  In this case Desperate Households will inform the customer as soon as possible of the shortage and will place the item on backorder. Desperate Households will not be liable for items which are out of stock from the supplier.

Agreement of Sale

Placing an item in the shopping cart without completing the purchase does not:

  1. constitute an agreement of sale between Desperate Households and the Customer. The Customer cannot hold Desperate Households liable if such items are not available when the purchase is completed later;
  2. constitute an order for such an item; and Desperate Households may remove such an item from the shopping basket if no stock is available.

An agreement of sale between Desperate Households and the Customer only comes into effect if and when:

  1. A credit card authorisation is received from the issuing bank; or
  2. A deposit of an electronic transfer is reflected on Desperate Households bank statement (and only if such payment is received within 48 hours after completion of the purchase).

Desperate Households reserves the right to refuse to accept and/or execute an order without giving any reasons.

Desperate Households also reserves the right to cancel orders in whole or in part as circumstances dictate. Desperate Households shall only be liable to refund monies already paid by the user.

Electronic Communications

By using this Website or communicating with Desperate Households by electronic means, the user consents and acknowledges that any and all agreements, notices, disclosures, or any other communication satisfies any legal requirement, including but not limited to the requirement that such communications should be in writing.

Intellectual Property Rights and Limited License

Desperate Households grants to the Customer, subject to the further terms of these Terms and Conditions, a non-exclusive, non-transferable, limited and revocable right to access, display, use, download and otherwise copy the current and future Content for personal, non-commercial and information purposes only.

This Website and the Content may not be reproduced, duplicated, copied, resold, visited or otherwise exploited for any commercial purpose without the express prior written consent of Desperate Households. The license does not allow the Customer to collect product or service listings, descriptions or other information displayed here, and does not allow any derivative use of this Website or the Content for the benefit of another merchant. The Customer may not frame nor use framing technologies to enclose the Website or the Content nor any part thereof without the express written consent of Provider.

Desperate Households and the Owners do not offer products or services to minors. If you are under the age of 18, you may not respond to or otherwise accept or act upon any offers in the Website.

Desperate Households and the Owners, their affiliates or subsidiary reserve the right to refuse service, terminate accounts, remove or edit content, or cancel orders in their sole discretion. Any unauthorised use terminates this license.

User License

Any user who places any information on any platform of the Desperate Households Website, grants to Desperate Households a perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable, unrestricted, worldwide license to use, copy, sub license, redistribute, adapt, transmit, publish and/or broadcast, publicly perform or display the information or material or any part of it.

Governing Law

This Website is hosted, controlled and operated from the Desperate Households offices within the Republic of South Africa and therefore governed by South African law.  Access to the Website from territories or countries where the content or purchase of the products sold on the Website is illegal is prohibited. The Customer may not use this Website in violation of South African export laws and regulations. If the Customer accesses this Website from locations outside of South Africa, that Customer is responsible for compliance with all local laws. These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, and the Customer consents to the jurisdiction of the Cape Town High Court in the event of any dispute. If any of the provisions of these Terms and Conditions are found by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid or unenforceable, that provision shall be enforced to the maximum extent permissible so as to give effect to the intent of these Terms and Conditions, and the remainder of these Terms and Conditions shall continue in full force and effect. These Terms and Conditions constitute the entire agreement between Desperate Households and the Customer with regard to the use of the Content and this Website.


Any person that delivers or attempts to deliver any damaging code to this Website or attempts to gain unauthorised access to any page on this Website shall be prosecuted and civil damages shall be claimed in the event that Desperate Households suffers any damage or loss.

The Customer allows Desperate Households to take all reasonable steps to ensure the integrity and security of the Desperate Household Supplies Website and back-office applications.

All credit card transactions are Secure Socket Layers encrypted.

Changes to Agreement

Desperate Households may, in its sole discretion, change this agreement or any part thereof at any time without notice. It is the Customer’s obligation to periodically check these Terms and Conditions at the Website for changes or updates. The Customer’s continued use of this Website following the posting of changes or updates will be considered notice of the Customer’s acceptance to abide by and be bound by these Terms and Conditions, including such changes or updates.

Terms and Termination

This agreement shall commence when the user logs onto the Desperate Households Website and continues indefinitely until terminated by Desperate Households in terms of Security hereto or for any other reason.

All rights not expressly granted herein are reserved.
